WOW Professions Picking guide

Any character in World of Warcraft can pick up to 2 primary WOW profession and all the secondary WOW professions.

What are the best WOW professions?

There aren't any "Best" WOW professions, only best advisable "WOW professions combos" for certain classes and conditions.

What WOW professions should I pick?

Your primary choice would be between picking up gathering WOW professions (skinning, mining and herbalism) and manufacturing WOW professions.

Use the following guidelines to get to a basic decision on which kind of WOW professions combo is best for your character, and then refer to our specific WOW professions FAQs to help you make your final choice.

Leveling First Character: 2 gathering WOW professions.

Your highest priority regarding WOW professions when leveling a first character should be to make as much gold a possible for your mounts and other gold sinks in the game (Buying a mount, changing spec, buying things off the Auction house etc).

A lot of new players look at a specific manufacturing WOW profession items list (for example, gear they can make threw leatherworking for lower levels) and think manufacturing those Items might help them level faster. That's a mistake.

Whatever it is the leveling product you want to manufacture with your WOW profession – just buy it off the Auction House instead. It will be ridiculously cheaper and you will probably be able to buy better leveling items off the Auction House anyway.

Picking up a manufacturing profession for your very first character will drain all you gold for no real payoff. Just Don’t Do it!

Even if you want to eventually have a manufacturing WOW profession at endgame ,leatherworking for example. it is still recommended to NOT pick leather working until you reach the maximum level. Instead pick up skinning + any other gathering WOW profession, and keep all the mats you got from skinning in your bank.

When you reach the maximum level drop the extra gathering WOW profession (or both professions!) and use your skinning mats in the bank to level up leatherworking.

Gold Making: 2 gathering WOW professions

Manufacturing WOW professions are a very big gold sink. If you're not looking for a specific single profession buff, then just take 2 gathering WOW professions and make tons of gold in no time.

PVE players (raiding and questing)

Here your personal preferences and game preferences come into play. If you'd still like to earn gold from your WOW professions, a good combo would be a single manufacturing WOW profession with the corresponding gathering WOW profession for the mats.

Such traditional combos can be:

Skinning + Leatherworking
Mining + Blacksmithing/ Engineering
Herbalism + Alchmey/ Inscriptions

Contrary to new players beliefs Leatherworking, tailoring and Blacksmithing aren't beneficial only to those who can use the products (rogues and druid= leather etc).

Each WOW  profession has something unique to offer to any character. Be sure to check our various FAQs on specific WOW professions to decide which "combo" is best for you.

If you happen to have a very rich character, or you have a lot of income (for instance, if you do a lot of dailies, or you're one of those rare breeds who likes farming) you may want to pick up 2 manufacturing WOW professions. Just keep in mind that leveling a manufacturing WOW profession from scratch can easily cost up to 5-6K gold and even more, so think carefully if your gold balance can really afford that.

If you're a "heavy" raider check out Alchemy: it provides a unique feature of increasing consumables duration and effect while raiding, which apeals to many raiders.

PVP Players:

PVP focused Players usually look for specific utilities the profession can provide them. Engineering used to be a very PVP focused WOW profession in this regard, since it offers various unique gear "tricks" that no other WOW profession offers.

However, most of these gears don't function in arenas, which is considered the main PVP activity ATM. You may still want to check out engineering if you mainly do BGs though.

Two WOW professions that offer unique features for arena are Herbalism (That offers a HoT effect usable in arena) and Alchemy (Offering the use of special healing potions in arena), which can turn out to be a real life savers in arenas, where every little survivability counts and can turn the tides of a match.
