Make sure the guide preview has proof of their claim.
If it's a gold guide, screenshots are just not enough. They can be manipulated threw Photoshop easy. You need a video, prefferable where you see evidence the video was'nt taken on a private server.
For leveling guides make sure it's main focus is quest leveling.
Unless you specifically hate questing, and you're 100% sure that's not what you want to do, you should get a guide focusing around questing.
It was once very common to try to power level threw hours and hours of endless grinding and mob killing, but blizzards recent patches make questing more rewarding, with a huge boost to Experience gained threw questing, which should make your primary levleing tool hands down.
That's why addons like the iDemise leveling guide, or the "Zygor's guide" offer have such good results and popularity.
Is your guide focuses ONLY on grinding, without as much as being aware of the fact questing is faster, it might be an outdates guide.
Make sure the guide is made for all classes.
And if not, make sure that it's at least made for the specific class you intend to play

Find out if there will be future support for when WoTLK is out.
Check out if there are added addons to the guide.
Any addon that comes as a backup to the guide is excellent, such as with iDemise leveling guide, or the "Zygor's guide". if the guide does'nt have and addon at LEAST make sure the guide is printable, and not only web based. That means the guide is either a book, or a printable file like a PDF file
Make sure you have some kind of support.
There are lots of ways to get support for the product you're about to buy. Mail support, forums, chat channels etc. These are all available threw various packages, you just need to pick!
