Blizzard have announced some more interesting info on future changes coming 3.1 and beyond:
  • "Concerted Efforts" and "For Great Honor" repeatable quests will require AV tokens again, but will award for more honor points (1241)
  • The new BG currently on design (though probably not to be released in 3.1) is a BG resembling AV more then any other current BG. It will also have similarities to older versions on AV: probably meaning a longer BG then the current AV version.
  • Similar to big raid instances in the past, Yogg-Saron (the final boss of Ulduar) and Algalon will NOT be tested on PTR prior to 3.1 release to keep the element of surprise.
  • However, as soon as they hit live and more is known on them, you will be able to visit out Yogg-Saron strategy page and Algalon strategy pages to learn more on the encounter.

Blizzard has announced some changes to the arena rating system starting season at season 6.
  • Arena teams will start at 0 rating instead of the current 1500.
  • A player joining a team with a rating of 1000 or more will start at a personal rating of 1000.
  • Items purchased with arena points will stat at 1250 rating requirement.

  • Blizzard announced the current development of a new Battleground due to be released in Wrath of the Lich King.
  • On the same note, they announced a future change to the PVP reward system, to allow for more skill based rewards from Battleground as opposed to the current "Mindless Grind" system.
Arenas became the focal point of PvP because there exists in the rating system an easier way to measure skill. On the contrary, battlegrounds shifted from the focus and the means by which the most competitive PvP rewards could be obtained because there's almost no measurement of skill. Someone could AFK their way to great gear just as easily as someone legitimately playing to win every match.

We don't like this though, as arenas really are meant to be an E-sport side game, not the end all, be all of World of Warcraft PvP. We understand it's a niche game that's not for everyone. What we want to do is revamp the battleground system and create some better functionality to measure skill so that players have access to more comparable rewards to those issued via the arenas. We'd also like to provide the means for player to level up via PvP should that be their preference.

We have a new battleground on the way for Wrath of the Lich King as well. It's looking pretty cool so far.
