Hunters are excellent DPS classes. They are one of easiest to master, and therefore make great candidate for players first chars. Although not everyone appreciate the simplicity, it is a very fun class, and a talented player can make the hunter excel to greater extent then most players realize.

Hunters Solo Play:

Since the hunters control a pet that can tank for them, they are great class for solo playing. Grinding and leveling are probably the easiest with hunters.

Hunters Group play:

Hunters make an excellent addition to any groupo or raid because they bring very high damage as well as buff to the whole raid, such as range classes attack boosts and mana regen boost.

Hunters' amazing DPS capabilities as well as the ability to lay traps and "Misdirect pull" (attacking a mob and making it attack the tank instead of the hunter) makes them wanted in both small groups and Raids alike.
